«Greetings from Luxembourg». Un voyage à travers le monde du tourisme

De tous temps, les hommes ont voyagé. Mais le tourisme, en tant que voyage et séjour d'agrément, est un phénomène récent : trois siècles à peine en Europe, deux cents ans au Luxembourg. Aujourd'hui, on critique le tourisme pour son impact négatif et son manque d'authenticité. Or même ses plus féroces critiques ne sont pas prêts à renoncer aux plaisirs du voyage. Plus d'un fuit les touristes, mais tous adorent partir en vacances.
Le mouvement touristique s'affirme désormais à l'échelle planétaire. Voyager a cessé d'être un privilège occidental. À Luxembourg comme ailleurs, on accueille de plus en plus de touristes non-occidentaux. Face à cet essor sans précédent, des voix s'élèvent pour demander que le phénomène touristique soit réexaminé. En faisant observer que « le monde du tourisme » est plus complexe qu'il n'y paraît, ces voix évoquent la possibilité d'un regard nouveau et pluridisciplinaire, qui va au-delà des idées reçues. L'exposition Greetings from Luxembourg. Un voyage à travers le monde du tourisme s'inscrit dans cette réflexion.

Organisée par le Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg dans le cadre du 75ème anniversaire du Luxembourg City Tourist Office, Greetings from Luxembourg nous invite à vivre nouvellement nos façons d'être et nos manières de voir lorsque nous sommes touristes. En même temps, l'exposition fait découvrir quelques traits caractéristiques de la genèse et du fonctionnement du tourisme au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Dans le meilleur des cas, elle encourage le visiteur à cultiver au quotidien la curiosité inhérente au regard touristique.

Seit jeher reist der Mensch. Doch Reisen als Freizeitbeschäftigung, sprich: "Tourismus", ist ein relativ neues Phänomen, in Europa seit knapp drei Jahrhunderten geläufig, in Luxemburg seit zweihundert Jahren. Heute wirft man dem Tourismus allenthalben negative Auswirkungen und mangelnde Authentizität vor. Doch selbst seine ärgsten Kritiker sind nicht bereit, auf die Freuden des Reisens zu verzichten. Niemand will selbst Tourist sein, und doch fahren alle in Ferien.

Die Tourismusbewegung trägt heute globale Züge. In Luxemburg wie auch andernorts trifft man zunehmend auf nicht-westliche Besucher. Angesichts dieser Entwicklung werden Stimmen laut, die eine neue Herangehensweise an den Tourismus einfordern. Sie verweisen darauf, dass die "Welt des Tourismus" komplexer ist, als es scheint, und treten für einen interdisziplinären Ansatz ein, der über die gängigen Meinungen hinausgeht. Die Ausstellung Greetings from Luxembourg. Eine Reise in die Welt des Tourismus möchte einen Beitrag zu diesen Überlegungen leisten.

Die zum Anlass des 75-jährigen Bestehens des Luxembourg City Tourist Office organiserte Schau erlaubt es dem Besucher, sein Verhalten und seine eigene Sichtweise als Tourist neu zu erfahren. Gleichzeitig dokumentiert sie die Entstehungsgeschichte und die Hauptmerkmale des Tourismus im Großherzogtum Luxemburg. Im besten Falle ermutigt sie den Besucher dazu, sich die für den touristischen Blick so charakteristische Neugierde auch im Alltag zu bewahren.

Man has travelled since time immemorial. Yet tourism, in terms of pleasure trips and travel, is a more recent phenomenon, which has been around for barely three centuries in Europe and a mere two hundred years in Luxembourg. Today, tourism is criticised for having a negative impact and for lacking authenticity. Nevertheless, even sceptics do not wish to abandon the pleasures of tourism. While many steer clear of tourists, everyone loves going on holiday.
The tourism trend has since expanded to a global level. Travel is no longer a privilege restricted to westerners. In Luxembourg as elsewhere, more and more non-western tourists are being welcomed. In view of this unprecedented boom, calls are being made for the tourism phenomenon to be re-examined. Claiming that "the world of tourism" is richer than it appears through the eyes of its critics, these voices advocate a new and multidisciplinary view that looks beyond commonly held beliefs. The exhibition Greetings from Luxembourg. A journey into the world of tourism adheres to this point of view.

Organised by the Luxembourg City History Museum in the context of the 75th anniversary of the Luxembourg City Tourist Office, Greetings from Luxembourg invites visitors to experience our way of being and our outlook as tourists. At the same time, the exhibition reveals aspects and elements characterising the beginnings of the tourism phenomenon and its functioning in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Finally, it encourages visitors to foster, on a more daily basis, the curiosity that is inherent in the tourist gaze.
